Georgia and Daytona 2014

Savanah Georgia

My fisrt stop to Daytona was a half mile in Savanah to do some testing on the Dick Ford/Skip Eaken XR750. Tha All Star Race got rained out Friday and the ran it Saturday night after the Amatuer Races.  I ran both my Yamaha 450 and the Harley, it was my first race as a GNC Expert.  There wasn't a lot of time to make many changes since they were on a curfew, so i concentrated on getting the Harley dialed in.  It ran good and had a lot of power just had to fine tune the suspension and the rear brakes.  I finished 5th in my heat for my 450 and the Harley.  In  the final I finished 8th on the 450 and 9th on the Harley.

Velousia, FL.

I decided to do a little more testing at Velousia Half Mile on the Harley.  I got the suspension dialed in a little more and ran practice.  Everything seemed to be working good except I noticed gas dripping from the tank.  There was a hole so I decided not to continue.

Daytona, FL

Day 1:  I struggled all day trying to get my Yamaha 450 dialed in on this Short Track.  I wasn't very satisfied with my results where I qulaified 33rd.  My dad I made adjustments all day and seemed to improve as the day went on, but i still wasn't happy with my results.  I finihed 10th in the heat and 8th in the semi.

Day 2:  I felt better going into the day,  My times were improving but my results weren't.  I still only qualified 35th.  After talking with Mike Hacker and Les Washbon, i realized that i just needed to relas and settle down.  Not to overthink and to go out and have some fun.  After doing that everything started to work.  i finished 9th in my heat and was moving forward.  it all came together in my semi where i held off Henry Wiles for several laps and passed Jared Mees.  i finished 6th and was still going forward.  I didn't make the main, but I  felt a lot better.

My next big race is on the Harley in May.  I will continue testing and riding.

2013 Race Summary

I wasn't very good about keeping you updated last season so here is a year in review. in the spring many of the races we cancled due to weather. in july I finally got to race at Haggerstown, Md. At this race I used my provional and run both the 450 Pro Class and the Expert Twins class.  I qualified well on the 750 Harley and made the main right out of my heat.  I was struggling a little on the 450 that day, and finished 13th in the final.  I had a much better day on the Harley and  I finished 14th in main event on the 750 and made my first Expert Main.  This inspired me to work on my 750 program to get ready for 2014. I made the decission not to go out west , but to ride the 750 as much as possibel.  I went up north to Canada and  learned a lot, even had a few podeums.

The next Gnc Race I rode was the Peoria TT.  I qualified and finished 13th on the 450 aand was very thankful I wasn.t one the many riders who crashed out.

Next was the Indy Mile and I ran well all day on both bikes.  Although I qualified, i missed making the main by one possion.  On the 450 I ran godd all day.  I finished 3rd and was on the podeum.

The next weekend was Colonial Downs, Virginia, a new track added to the schedule.  It was a 1 1/4 mile track and i was very pumped to ride there. The 450 was running great all day long and didn't have to make many changes.  My dad couldn't make it but, my engine builder Ron Jewel was there.  I qualified up front and won my heat as well as the final event.  It was another great accomplishment for me.

Next was the Springfield Mile.  I won here last year on my 450. With rule changes AMA wasn't running 450 this year.  AMA wanted to try a new class, Basic Twins, I ran the 750 both days in this new class and I finished 3rd and made the podeum on the first day and finished 2nd the second day, on the podeum again.

For the last few races of the year i went to Pa and Geneva , NY to ride the 750 some more instead of riding the 450 out west.  I was a very successful year and i can't wait for 2014.

Frederick and Haggertown Half Miles

The past few weeks of racing have been exciting.  I have been racing somewhere everyweekend between Canada, Ohio and Maryland.  In Maryland, I raced the Frederick Half Mile and Allstar Race, where I had a very sucessful day.  I won my heats in the 450Pro Class and the Pro twins race by several bike lengths, and after a bad start on the 450, I finished second by a half a tire.

A couple of days later was the GNC Race at Haggerstown, Md.  It was very hot and I struggled getting both bikes to work.  I didn't qualify well but I pushed on. I was also racing both classes using my provisional in the Expert Twins.  I my expert twins race I started out in the back after a poor start, but after a red flag and and a restart, I got a better start and was running 6th.  I had to get  top four to go directly to the main.  In my head I was going to the main.  I moved forward each lap and in the last lap I battled with National #10 Johnny Lewis for the forth position and my ticket to the main event.  I finished forth and I MADE MY FIRST EVER EXPERT MAIN.  I still had the 450 to run and I was up front in the heat until I got pushed up to the wall and went backwards and didn't make it to the main, and had to run a semi.  The track had changed and I tried to make the proper changes for my last races.  The 450 semi was first and I worked real hard to get the last spot in the main event.  Now I had a few minutes break before the 450 main but, not really enough time to make a lot of changes.  I had a 16 lap 450 main event with a 25 lap expert Twin race immediatley after.  My stratagy was to run a clean smooth race on the 450 so I would be good for the twins race.  In the 450 main I had a third row start and just put my head down and tried to go forward.  I went forward for a few laps than I had a hard time getting the bike to work and so I stayed in the back and finished 13th.  Not where I wanted to be but, I knew I had the Twins race next.  So off the 450 and onto the Harley for the Main.  I was very excited, I had a second row start.  I spun off the line and was in the back working my way forward.  I was up to tenth and battled between tenth and eleventh for a while.  I ended up 14th.  I was tired but very happy of all that I had accomplished that day.

I also raced Leamington, Canada where I made my first Dash for Cash.  This was also a pretty good day finishing forth in the Open Expert, and forth in the 450 Expert and 5th in the Dash. The twin broke in practice so I rode the 450 all day.

This weekend I have Welland, Ont National and Medina.  I chose not to go to California so that I could spend some time learning to ride the Harley.

My next GNC race will be Peoria in Aug and I plan on riding the Harley agian in Indy and  Springfield.

California and Springfield

Well I have been very busy finishing school.  I had a pretty good semester and A, B B+, and a C so far, waiting for the other class.

I have also been working on the Harley getting ready for the Mile at Springfield.  I race a local race in PA and got a second on the 450 before I headed out to Stockton, California.  The day started great, I was 4th fastest in the first qualifying run, but in the second qualifier I fell.  I still qualified 12th fastest. As the day went on the track changed severly and I struggled to keep up with it.  I ended up missing qulaifyinf for the main by one, but I learned a lot about my suspension so I will be ready for the next one.

Last weekend we drove out to Springfield, Il and they cancled it due to all the ran.  It will be run as a double header on Labor Day weekend.

My next Pro race will be in Lima, Oh at the end of June.  In the mean time I will be going to Welland, Ont. and Medina for a few local races.

Springfield Mile

After a long recovery from breaking my femur in March racing in Georgia, I'm back and strong as ever.  Last weekend I had my first Pro Singles win on the Springfield Mile.  After a crash near the end of the race, there was a five lap dash for the win.  In a single file restart sitting in 10th I made a run at the bottom and hoped someone would go with me to draft the the front.  Luckily Zak Palmer went with me and it was a photo finish with me ahead by 0.004 sec.

I am planning on going to Tuson, Az on Oct 6 and finishing the season in Pomona, Ca. on Oct 13th. Hopefully there will be more good things to report.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me and all my sponcers for all my success.

happy holidays
I hope everyone had a happy holiday.  Mine was good.  I've been waiting to ride on the ice but the New York weather is not cooperating.  I have been traveling to DeQuoin to the indoor short track to do some off season training and bike set up.  I am ready and waiting for Daytona in March.  My dad and I are traveling down to do some racing.  They say it is supposed to get cold this week I am hoping that we get some ice to ride on.

Knoxville, Iowa and Brainerd, MN

The past few weekends have been busy and I have been doing a lot of traveling with Dustin Say and James Rispoli.  First we went to Knowville, Iowa and it looked like a fast track.  In practice I was spinning coming out of the turns.  I dropped the pressure but then I started to hop out of the turns.  I tried a gearing change.  In the last qualifying session I kept coming into the turns to hard which pushed me up to the slippery top. The harder I tried the higher up the track I went.  I made the show but barely.  I qualified 30th.  I made some major changes and went out for my heat.  I had to start from the third row and I got a horrible start and the harder I tried to move forward the worse I ran.  About half way through I finally relaxed and started to move forward but not enough to get into the main I had to go to the semi with another third row start.  In the semi I got a good start but got pinched off and almost fell.  I pushed on real hard and worked my way up to 6th.  I neede to be in the top 4, I finally got the track figured out but ran out of laps, I finished fifth and didn't make the main.

The next race we went to was in Brainerd, MN. . a third mile track.  Practice went great and I qualified 17th not as good as I wanted, I got held up in the last qualifing.  I pulled the first heat, it was cold there and I had my tire warmers on.  After opening ceremonies we got to test the track but it was very slick and they decided to do some more track prep.  When we finally got going I got a great start and was going good when we had a restart.  I didn't get as good of a restart this time but manage to work my was up to forth and in the main when i got a flat tire and couldn't finish.  Now I had to go to the semi and start from dead last on the third row.  I had a great running bike this week except for the tire, I just hoped I could get to forth to get to the main.  In the semi I got an awesome start and worked my way forward every lap.  I finally got to 5th when I got the white flag.  I one lap and had to move up oned position and about an 8 bike lead.  When I  went across the checker I was at his footpeg.  I finished 5th again and not good enough.

I will not be at Calistoga, but I will be at Pomono for the last race of the year.

Springfield Race Report

Labor Day weekend was the second Springfield Mile for the year.  My parents and I made the long trip.  Day 1 was the short track and it was a small track.  I qualified for the first time, but I still struggled.  It was a slam fest in the tight little track.  I didn't transfer from my heat so I had to go to the semi.  The semi was filled with restart after restart and the bikes were getting hot. I was working my way up to the front when I got taken out and had to start on the back row and with all the restarts it was full.  By the restart my clutch was hot and I got a bad start.  I worked my way up to six but it wasn't good enough to get into the main.

Day2 was the Mile and I was ready.  First practice went great, the track was the fastest it has ever been and I was in 5th place.  I left the bike alone and I ended up 14th.  I made some changes and went out for my last qualifying session.  I ended up qualifying 11th finally I was in the front row.  Th eheat didn't go as well, my start was bad and I got brake checked in the last lap putting me in 8th, so again I had to go to the semi.  In the semi I got a better start I was out front most of the race with a battle with Michael Toon.  I won the semi and made the main , but this would give me a third row start.  I got another decent start in the main and was trying to work the outside.  I was in the back for the first few laps then i started working my way to the front.  The pack of 18 never broke into smaller groups and it was a little scary going four to five wide.  You had to be extra careful not to get sucked into the draft at the wrong time to prevent an accident.  By the end of the race I was in third and by the last lap I was leading down the back straight.  I wanted to get passed so that I could draft to the checkered.  But that didn't workbecause Cory Crawford crashed in turn three on the last lap.  I finished 6th and was lucky I didn't get collected in the crash where three other riders went down.

Medina TT final race
Last weekend was the final race of the season.  It was a battle for the 250 Expert Class between Brad Hazel and myself the winner of this race would determine who would win the class. Everyone says it was the best race of the day Cole got out front right away and took the lead but the race was for 2nd and the points leader.  Brad and I passed each other several times in each lap.  In the end I got by Brad and pulled away.  Great race Brad!!!  In the Open Expert race I finished 3rd and 5th overall for the year.

I 96 then off to California

Last weekend I went to I 96.  I struggled there all day.  I qualified poorly, 30th which put me in the back row.  My heat wasn't much better, I finished 14th so I had to go to the semi.  I finally figured the track out but it was to late.   I finished 6th not good enough to get me to the main event.

I am in the top 10 in points so next I go to California to race Lodi on Fri and Sacramento Mile on Saturday.  It should be a good trip.

Lima Ohio

Last weekend my family and I went to Lima, Ohio Half Mile.  I was excitted, I did well on test day.  I was in 11th after practice, but qualifying didn't go as well.  The track got a lot slower and rougher and I struggled.  I ended up qualifying 23rd.  I was diappointed because this is my favorite kind of track.  In my heat I stalled my bike on the line, but I got lucky they gave a complete restart.  On the restart I got a great start but as the race went on I could feel my rear shock getting spongey and could run the fast line.  I finished 6th qualifying me for the main event.  After talking with Steve Beatty of 26 Suspension we made some changes.  In the final I got a decent start and ran the high line and started going forward.  I got up to eighth and battled around 8th and 9th and 10th for a few laps.  I moved around trying different lines trying to find one to get me to the front.  Finally I stuck it under Mikey Martin and drove in real hard to get back 9th place.  I learned a lot about suspension set up which will help for Fredrick MD next weekend.

Next weekend there is a big race at Medina where there should be a lot of Pro riders and the off to Fredrick, MD Allstar Race on the 4th.
